Abstract

ABSTRACT

Drum brake systems generate heat due to friction between the brake lining and the drum during braking. If the heat cannot be dissipated optimally, the drum temperature will increase and potentially reduce braking performance. This study aims to determine the effect of variations in the number of ventilation holes in the drum cover on the rear drum temperature of a motorcycle. The method used was an experimental method with variations of no ventilation holes, 4 holes, 6 holes, 8 holes, and 10 ventilation holes. Temperature measurements were conducted after the braking process for each variation, and the results were visualized as temperature distribution. The results showed that increasing the number of ventilation holes could reduce the drum temperature. The variation without ventilation holes produced the highest average temperature of 39.1 °C, while the variation with 10 ventilation holes produced the lowest average temperature of 34.4 °C. The temperature distribution visualization showed that the highest temperature occurred in the drum wall area that was in frictional contact with the brake lining. Therefore, the addition of ventilation holes in the drum cover was proven to improve heat dissipation, resulting in a lower operating temperature of the drum.
