Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia sufferers in the Goranggareng Taji Community Health Center area in 2022 will be 26% of the 388 elderly residents. In 2023, 28% of elderly people will have high cholesterol levels, 66% will have upper threshold cholesterol levels and the rest will have normal cholesterol levels with the highest age range being over 60 years old. The majority of elderly people have poor diets because they consume fatty foods 2-3 times a week, as much as 40%. This study aims to determine the relationship between diet and cholesterol levels in the elderly. This type of research is cross sectional with the population being all elderly people who actively visit the Gorag Gareng Taji Health Center totaling 354 people. The sample was taken using a purposive sampling technique totaling 78 people. The variables in this study are diet and cholesterol levels. Data were collected using the FFQ questionnaire instrument and a tool to measure cholesterol levels. The statistical test uses Chi Square correlation with a significance value of ά<0.05. The diet of the majority of elderly people or 46 respondents (60%) is in the good category and almost half, namely 32 respondents (40%) is in the poor category. Most elderly people's cholesterol levels or 44 respondents (56%) were in the normal category and almost half, namely 34 respondents (46%) were in the abnormal category. The statistical test results showed a p value = 0.00 (<0.05) so that H0 was rejected, which means there is a relationship between diet and cholesterol levels in the elderly. The worse the diet, the more abnormal the cholesterol levels, so we should further increase monitoring of the elderly's diet and measure cholesterol levels in the elderly regularly every month through elderly posyandu, posbindu and joint sports activities. Key words: diet, elderly, cholesterol levels
