Abstract

This research was aimed to know the effectiveness of Karawitan Music towards the students’ reading ability at the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Kecamatan Ponorogo. This research was an experimental research with True Experimental Research. From nine classes, the researcher used two classes that selected by randomly to be the sample. The samples of this research were VIII F as experiment class and VIII D as control class. In this research, the researcher gave a treatment to the experiment class. The treatment was using Karawitan Music as accompanist music when teaching and learning happened. The instrument of this research included pre-test and posttest that consists of questions and multiple choices contained the indicator of reading especially in narrative text for collecting data. The data analysis techniques used to see whether the effectiveness using Karawitan music as accompanist music during teaching and learning happened. The analyze data technique that is used in this research was Sample T-test. The result of the pre-test indicated that = 0.265 whereas = 2.000 with dk = 62 and = 5%. So, , it could be concluded that was accepted and was rejected. It means that both of groups have the same English learning outcomes. Then, the result of posttest stated that = 3.766 whereas = 1.671 with dk = 62 and = 5%. So, , it could be concluded that was rejected and was accepted. It means that Karawitan music effectively used in teaching and learning reading at the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Kecamatan Ponorogo in the academic year 2016/2017.
