Abstract

Since 2015, the Southeast Asian Economic Community forum has been launched. This is a new challenge for the people of Indonesia. To equip its students, Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo held an English certification program. The English language certification program is followed by all majors at the Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo except for the English education department. The purpose of this study was to determine student perceptions of the English language certification program implemented at the Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo. Researchers used qualitative methods. Researchers used interview research instruments and questionnaires. The subjects of this study were 4th semester students majoring in mathematics education at Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo. The study was conducted on June 29, 2022. Students' perceptions of the English language certification program have positive and negative perceptions. Some students gave negative perceptions during the certification program, they felt they had not changed because their knowledge of English was quite low, and the material provided was quite difficult to make students feel they did not understand the material provided from learning. However, some students gave a positive response to English language certification, namely gaining new knowledge. From the results of the study, it was concluded that the English language certification program did not provide language development to students according to their majors.
