Abstract

Key Words: Vocabulary, Speaking Skills, Word Puzzle. Vocabulary is one of the language components that have to use as a stepping stone in learning grammar. It contains some meaning fulwords. Therefore, speaking is important for students who learn a language because without speaking a language can not be learned optimally. Based on the observation in SMPN 01 Badegan, it was found that students at that class had low performance in speaking, most of them were not actively involved in the learning process and were easy to be bored in memorizing some vocabulary. The purpose of the study is to know the improvement of Word Puzzle of the student’s vocabulary in speaking skill at eight grade of SMP N 01 Badegan in academic year 2017/2018. The researcher used classroom action research as the research design. The subject was eight grade students of SMPN 01 Badegan on 2017/2018 lesson year. The class consists of 28 students. Before implementing the research, the researcher made lesson plan, prepare instruments, questionnaire, observation, and test. The minimum score was <75. The researcher was done in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of six meetings. Based on the result of the speaking test in cycle I it was known that only 3 students of 28 students or 10.71 % students who got score > 75 ( the criteria of minimum standard ) and 25 student or 89.28 % students who got < 75. Therefore, the result of the first test had unfulfilled the criteria of the success. So, the researcher continued the research. The result of the test in cycle 2 showed improvement. 28 students or 100 % of students got score > 75. In psycomotor aspect, the students were more active to speak up, more confident and enjoyed in teaching and learning process. The result of questionnaire was 86.25 %. Finally, Word Puzzle is appropriate media to improve students vocabulary in speaking skill. The next researcher can develop this strategy to get better result in teaching and learning process.
