Abstract

Key words : Intensive Reading, Extensive Reading, Reading Comprehension The aim of this research was to investigate the effectiveness between intensive and extensive reading toward reading comprehension especially the effectiveness between intensive and extensive reading toward students’ reading comprehension at 10th grade SMK Kesehatan Bina Karya Medika Ponorogo in academic year 2016/2017 and the achievement of students reading comprehension in students at 10th grade SMK Kesehatan Bina KaryaMedika Ponorogo in academic year 2016/2017 after applied intensive and extensive reading method. The subject of the research was 20 students of XPK2 (Intensive Class) and 20 students of XAK (Extensive Class). The research was conducted by using quasi experimental method. The researcher attemps their research with groups that were intact, the groups have been constituted by means other than random selection. The research needed two kinds of classes, one using extensive reading as experimental class and another one intensive reading as control class. Experimental class is a class that is given treatment by using extensive reading and control class using intensive reading. The result of the research showed that the extensive class had higher mean score than intensive class in post test, with the mean score of extensive class was 76.2 while the intensive class was 65.3. Moreover, the mean of extensive class gained score was also higher than intensive class, with the mean of gained score of extensive class was 24,5 while the intensive class was 19,8.The analysis of the T-test with degree of freedom (df) is 38 and the critical value of the degrees of freedom with the degree of significance 5 % and the ttable < t observe = 2,0244 < 2,674.it can be showed that applying extensive reading was more effective than intensive reading toward student’s reading comprehension.
