Abstract

Motivation can be seen as the primary factor that helps the student in completing difficult task. Motivation also can be seen as an aspect of success when learning a target language related to speak the language. This study is aimed to investigate students’ motivation in speaking English class and the factors that affect in their speaking motivation. This is a descriptive qualitative study. Purposive sampling was used in the selection of participants and 14 students participated in this study. The data collected through classroom observation and questionnaire. The results revealed that students motivation is high level which is intrinsic motivation dominated. It also revealed that internal and external factors affect the students’ motivation in speaking English. The internal factor such as enjoyment, curiosity, challenge, self-efficacy, competitiveness, involvement, and attitude toward English language and culture are the factors that affect students’ motivation in speaking English in the class. While, grade, punishment, reward and praise, pressure, interesting material, further education or career, and wider network with foreigner are the external factor of motivation in speaking. The result of the research suggest that students should be more understand their own motivation so that they can focus on achieving the goal in language learning.
