Abstract

Key Words : Writing skill, Four Square Method The background of study in this research is based on the reality that student in SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo shows the mastering writing aspect is very low. Here, the researcher choose four square method in teaching writing. Four square method is a simple graphic organizer to guide students to organize their thoughts or plans before they write a complete paragraph that consists of main idea, supporting details, and conclusion. From those statements determine that four square method brings a lot of advantages to solve students’ problem in writing process. The purpose of this study to know the improvement of students’ writing skill by using Four Square Method at the second grade student of SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo in academic year 2014/2015. In this study, the researcher uses Classroom Action Research. It consists of four steps, they are; planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The researcher uses three instruments to do the research. They are observation, questionnaire and test. The result of observation checklist proves that the students are very active in the class. The result of questionnaire proves that the most of the students’ are motivated and interested in using four square method. The result of the test shows that in cycle 1 the students who reach KKM are only 13 students and in cycle 2 students who reach KKM become 25 students. The students’ mastery of writing improves extremely. Finally, the researcher concludes that the result of this research shows the improvement in students’ writing skill by using four square method at the second grade year students of SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo. The researcher hopes this method can increase the students’ appetence in writing and can solve some problems in learning writing.
