One of the educational approaches applied in the Islamic boarding school system is the Holistic Education model. This model aims to develop all dimensions of human potential in a comprehensive manner. Emotional and Spiritual Quotient are considered part of soft skills that enhance the meaning of other forms of intelligence and serve as the mental foundation that shapes a person’s positive behavior, enabling them to discover their identity, life purpose, and direction.
The objectives of this study are to: (1) describe the implementation of Holistic Education at Modern Islamic Boarding School Darussalam Gontor Female Campus 4 Kediri, East Java; (2) analyze strategies used to develop the Emotional and Spiritual Quotient (ESQ) of the female students; and (3) identify supporting factors, inhibiting factors, and solutions related to Holistic Education as an effort to develop the emotional and spiritual quotient of the santriwati at Modern Islamic Boarding School Darussalam Gontor Female Campus 4 Kediri, East Java. This research is a qualitative study. Data collection methods used include observation, documentation, and interviews. The data were analyzed using a descriptive method, and the validity of the data was ensured through triangulation techniques.
The findings reveal that the implementation of holistic education is reflected in the formulation of goals, vision, mission, motto, and the five principles of the pesantren, which collectively aim to balance all aspects of human potential. The learning curriculum is integrated, comprehensive, and independent balancing religious and general sciences while connecting them to all aspects of daily life. As part of its holistic education planning, Modern Islamic Boarding School Darussalam Gontor Female Campus 4 Kediri implements strategies to foster the emotional and spiritual quotient of its students by linking classroom materials with extracurricular activities through habituation, guidance, assignments, supervision, role modeling, the creation of a supportive environment, development programs, and counseling. These efforts help to internalize moral values in the santriwati. Extracurricular and co-curricular activities also support the content taught in class. Supporting factors include a well-established and standardized educational system, dedicated and sincere teachers, and adequate facilities and infrastructure. Inhibiting factors include issues with teacher professionalism and a lack of understanding among students regarding the importance of pesantren education.
