ABSTRACT
Al Banna, Usaid. 2025. THESIS. The Role of Self-Management in Overcoming Academic Procrastination of Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo Students. Advisor 1: Dr. Syarifan Nurjan, M.A. Advisor II: Devid Dwi Erwahyudin, M.Pd.
Keywords: UMPO Students, Self-Management, Academic Procrastination
Academic procrastination remains a significant problem in higher education and impacts student graduation delays. At Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo (UMPO), as of July 2024, more than 1,000 students from the 2018 to 2020 intakes had not graduated out of a total of 3,919 active students. Nationally, 2020 Higher Education data shows that of 8,483,213 students, only 1,535,074 graduated on time. Previous research has suggested that academic procrastination is influenced by poor self-management, but has not specifically examined the factors causing this behavior among UMPO students or the role of self-management in addressing it.
This study aims to determine the factors that influence academic procrastination among UMPO students. Then, this study explains the role of self-management in overcoming academic procrastination among UMPO students. Qualitative methods with a phenomenological approach have been used in this study. This study uses interviews and documentation as supporting data to answer two research focuses. This study found that academic procrastination among UMPO students is caused by internal and external factors. Internal factors include students' physical condition and psychological condition. External factors include dual roles of students, having full-time jobs outside of lectures, and technical obstacles such as minimal references obtained and damaged laptops used as a tool for working on thesis. Meanwhile, this study reveals that self-management has a role in building student self-awareness, the role of time management, the role of self-control, the role in increasing internal motivation and self-management as a cure for a disease called academic procrastination.
