This research is motivated by the researcher's interest in the importance of understanding of religious moderation for students as an educational and learning process in character building in order to answer and overcome the various complexities of problematic diversity that occur in society. SMA Muhammadiyah Boarding School (MBS) is a reference school within Muhammadiyah schools, with an increasing number of students each year and a mission to prepare cadres. This research examines the implementation of religious moderation in the curriculum management of Islamic boarding schools to improve students' Islamic Value understanding of SMA Muhammadiyah Boarding School Yogyakarta. The implementation is examined through the stages of planning, organizing, execution, and supervision within curriculum management in order to enhance students' understanding of Islamic values
This study is a descriptive qualitative research conducted at SMA Muhammadiyah Boarding School. The subjects of the research consist of the head of the pesantren, vice head, school principal, vice principal, alumni, and students. The data collection techniques used include observation, documentation, and interviews. To ensure the validity of the data, source triangulation was applied. The data analysis was carried out through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing.
The results of the study show that the implementation of religious moderation within the curriculum at SMA Muhammadiyah Boarding School Yogyakarta is carried out in an integrated manner through the school’s vision and mission, curriculum structure, and intracurricular, cocurricular, and extracurricular learning activities. The values of religious moderation namely national commitment, tolerance, anti-violence, and accommodation of local culture have been instilled through various learning and mentoring activities. Students' understanding of Islam has significantly improved in the cognitive (knowledge), affective (attitude), and psychomotor (behaviour) domains. They show a balanced Islamic mindset, free from extremism, and are willing to engage in dialogue and live peacefully alongside those with different beliefs. Attitudes of mutual respect, tolerance, appreciation, and interreligious harmony are evident among the students.
