Abstract
ABSTRACT
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STRESS LEVELS, SOCIAL SUPPORT, AND SLEEP QUALITY AMONG THE ELDERLY AT THE MAGETAN TRESNA WERDHA SOCIAL SERVICE UNIT (PSTW)

For elderly residents at the Magetan Social Service Unit for the Elderly (UPT PSTW), stress can stem from various factors such as changes in living arrangements, separation from family, and a lack of family attention or visits. These conditions can impact the psychological well-being of the elderly and impair their sleep quality. In such circumstances, interactions and support among fellow elderly residents—through communication, sharing stories, and mutual assistance - can serve as a vital source of social support. This study aimed to examine the relationship between stress levels, social support, and sleep quality among the elderly at (UPT PST)W Magetan. It was a quantitative study employing an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 60 elderly individuals selected from a population of 145 using purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS), the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).
Data analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test and Multiple Logistic Regression. The results indicated that 26.7% of respondents experienced severe stress, 55.0% reported moderate social support, and 51.7% had poor sleep quality. Chi-Square tests revealed significant associations between stress levels and sleep quality (p < 0.001) and between social support and sleep quality (p < 0.001). Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that stress levels (p=0.003; OR=16.024; 95% CI=3.138–81.821) and moderate social support (p=0.012; OR=20.150; 95% CI=1.938–209.499) were significantly associated with sleep quality among the elderly.
Consequently, higher stress levels are linked to a greater risk of poor sleep quality. Meanwhile, the social support received by the elderly comes not only from family but also from fellow elderly peers. For those who have lost family members or rarely receive visits, support from friends within the care facility environment can serve as a vital source of support in coping with stress and improving sleep quality.
