Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of fostering discipline and responsibility in students as part of educational goals, particularly within the *madrasah* (Islamic school) environment. However, in the modern era, this character-building process faces various challenges, necessitating an active role from teachers—specifically *Akidah Akhlak* (Islamic Creed and Ethics) teachers. These teachers serve as key figures in shaping students' disciplined behavior and sense of responsibility through role modeling, guidance, and continuous supervision. Nevertheless, implementation encounters obstacles such as low awareness among some students, a lack of supervision outside school hours, and the behavioral impact of digital media usage. This study aims to describe the roles, strategies, and impact of *Akidah Akhlak* teachers in fostering discipline and responsibility among students at MA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo.
The study employs Mulyasa’s theory of teacher roles, Thomas Lickona’s character-building theory, Hurlock’s theory of discipline, and Kohlberg’s theory of responsibility as analytical frameworks. A qualitative approach utilizing a case study design was adopted. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and document analysis.
The findings indicate that *Akidah Akhlak* teachers fulfill roles as educators, role models, guides, motivators, and supervisors in shaping students' discipline and responsibility. Strategies employed include role modeling, cultivating religious habits, assigning tasks and responsibilities, reinforcing positive behavior, and implementing a system of rewards and sanctions. The impact of these strategies is evident in improved student discipline regarding adherence to school rules, punctuality, and responsibility in completing assignments. However, character development is not yet fully optimal, as some students still exhibit disciplined behavior only when under teacher supervision. Therefore, more consistent guidance and collaboration among the school, teachers, and the students' home environments are required to more deeply instill the traits of discipline and responsibility.
