Hypertension is one of the health problems commonly experienced by older adults and can cause decreased activity tolerance, fatigue, dizziness, and limitations in performing physical activities. One non-pharmacological intervention that can be implemented is Brisk Walking Exercise. This scientific paper aimed to apply Brisk Walking Exercise to an elderly patient with hypertension and the nursing problem of activity intolerance at the Tresna Werdha Social Service Unit of Magetan.
Nursing care was provided to Mr. A, a 75-year-old elderly patient, for five days using a systematic nursing process approach. The assessment showed that Mr. A had a history of hypertension for more than three years, accompanied by recurrent vertigo, unsteadiness when standing, and fatigue during activities. Brisk Walking Exercise was performed for approximately 30 minutes gradually over five days, with monitoring of vital signs and the patient's response before and after exercise. Following the intervention, activity tolerance improved, as indicated by reduced fatigue and unsteadiness and an increased ability to perform 30 minutes of walking exercise independently. Blood pressure also decreased from 160/100 mmHg to 140/80 mmHg at the final evaluation.
Nursing care for elderly patients with the nursing problem of activity intolerance is expected to provide guidance for healthcare professionals and caregivers in implementing Brisk Walking Exercise as a non-pharmacological intervention to improve activity tolerance and help control blood pressure in elderly patients with hypertension.
