This study aims to describe and analyze the role of numeracy literacy in shaping the mathematics learning culture of female students in Class VIII C at Al-Mawaddah Girls’ Islamic Boarding School. The study was motivated by the fact that the female students’ mathematics learning culture has not developed optimally due to the heavy workload of boarding school activities, which limits their time for independent study. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach with 19 eighth-grade Class C female students as subjects. Data were collected through participatory observation, semi-structured interviews with three informants selected via purposive sampling, and documentation. Data analysis utilized the Miles and Huberman model, while data validity was tested through triangulation, persistent observation, and member checking.
The research findings indicate that the female boarding school students’ mathematics learning culture has not yet developed optimally. Nevertheless, students with better numeracy skills tend to exhibit a more positive mathematics learning culture, such as being more disciplined in their practice, more open to mistakes, more active in asking questions and participating in discussions, and more persistent in solving mathematical problems. These findings indicate that numeracy literacy plays a role in shaping the culture of learning mathematics, however, this role is not yet optimal because it is still influenced by other factors, such as math anxiety and the demanding nature of boarding school activities, which limit time for independent study.
