Abstract

ABSTRAC
THE EFFECT OF CELERY LEAF LIQUID EXTRACT USING THE INFUSION METHOD ON BLOOD PRESSURE CHANGES IN HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS
At Badegan Public Health Center

A Pre-Experimental Study at Badegan Public Health Center, Badegan District
By: Arga Bagus Kusuma

Hypertension poses a global health challenge with a high prevalence in Indonesia, including in Ponorogo Regency. The utilization of complementary herbal therapies, such as celery (Apium graveolens L.), is increasingly favored by the public due to its potential active compounds that naturally stabilize blood pressure. This study aimed to determine the effect of administering liquid celery leaf extract using the infusion method on reducing blood pressure among hypertension patients at the Badegan Public Health Center.
This pre-experimental study used a one-group pretest-posttest design involving 15 hypertension patients aged 45–59 years selected through purposive sampling. The intervention consisted of administering liquid celery leaf extract at a dose of 200 mL/day (divided into two consumption doses) for seven consecutive days. Data normality was tested using the Shapiro-Wilk test, and parametric analysis was performed using the paired t-test.
The majority of respondents were female (73.33%) and worked as farmers (53.33%). The mean blood pressure before the intervention (pretest) was 152.47 mmHg systolic and 88.73 mmHg diastolic. Following the intervention (posttest), the mean blood pressure decreased to 132.00 mmHg systolic and 84.53 mmHg diastolic. The paired t-test yielded a p-value < 0.001 (t-value systolic = 10.092; diastolic = 5.900), indicating the rejection of the null hypothesis.
The administration of liquid celery leaf extract via the infusion method has a significant effect on reducing both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. This reduction is triggered by the active compound apigenin, which acts as a calcium channel blocker, phthalide compounds that induce vasodilation, and a high potassium content that exerts a natural diuretic effect. Infusion extraction at 90°C is proven effective in maintaining the stability of the active compounds. This self-administered therapy is recommended for patients with hypertension.
