Keywords: Perceptions, Youtube, English Competence
The rise of digital media platforms such as YouTube has transformed language
learning by providing easily available and diversified content for developing
English ability. This study looks at how English Department students at
Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo see the usage of YouTube as a
supplemental tool for improving their English language skills. The study uses a case
study approach, qualitative research methods, to better understand the benefits,
strategies, and limitations of utilizing YouTube for language acquisition.
The study involved 27 students from various semesters (2, 4, 6, and 8) of the
English Education program. Results reveal that students perceive YouTube as a
valuable resource for improving their English competence due to its wide range of
educational videos and real-world language exposure. However, the study also
highlights challenges such as the reliability of content, effective time management,
internet access issues, and the absence of personalized feedback. Despite these
obstacles, the majority of students reported significant improvements in their
English skills through regular use of YouTube.
The findings indicate that instructors should explore adding YouTube into their
instructional practices to improve language learning. Furthermore, students should
be guided in selecting high-quality, relevant content, and more research is required
to build more strong frameworks for assessing YouTube's impact on English
language acquisition.
