Abstract

Speaking is an interactive process of creating significance through generating, getting,
and digesting information. Students are required to be more proficient in English and their
participation is important during the learning process. Many students still have problems
speaking English, such as lack of confidence, lack of vocabulary, and messy grammar. This
indicates that teacher strategies are needed to increase student participation in speaking.
The purpose of this study was to determine the strategies used by teachers to improve
students' speaking skills in the international class program and the implementation of these
strategies for students. The researcher employed a form of qualitative research approach
called the descriptive qualitative method. The data was gathered at MTsN 2 Ponorogo, where
two teachers who taught English in grades seventh and eight in the international class
program were involved. The researcher used interviews and documentation to collect the
data for this research.
The results of the study showed that there were a variety of teacher strategies for
teaching, namely games, role play, group discussion, pair work, and presentation. The
application of these strategies makes students much more fluent in speaking, and confidence,
and makes an increase in daily practice. It can be seen from the calculation through the gain
score to find the average of the two classes studied. Thus, it can measure the effectiveness of
a learning strategy or intervention in improving learner-learning outcomes. This method
provides a strong basis for evaluating the extent to which a learning strategy has contributed
to learners' understanding.
The research showed that international class program students are enthusiastic about
English lessons. Teachers adapt their strategies to the material, overcoming obstacles through
communication and choosing the right approach. A native speaker helps students implement
teaching materials and strategies, enhancing collaboration and global assessment. Researcher
found various approaches enhance creativity and innovation, improving teaching skills.
Students' progress increased after implementing strategies, and the N-gain score was used to
assess the success of the strategies.
