Abstract

Many students believe that studying English is difficult, which discourages
them from putting forth effort to enhance their language abilities. Given English's
prominence as a universal language used in many nations, particularly for
communication, Indonesian students must acquire at least a basic level of English
in order to speak with people from all over the world.
The goal of this study was to identify a lack of student motivation in
studying English, which resulted in decreasing student interest in learning English.
Researcher collected data for this study using qualitative research methods such as
interviews and questionnaires. This study was carried out at Madrasah Aliyah Al
Mukarrom in Ponorogo. There are sixteen questions for open interviews and ten for
questionnaires. The respondents was 25 students from a single class, plus interviews
with the teacher who taught English in that classroom.
The findings obtained by the researcher were the discovery of several
internal and external factors that resulted in decreased student motivation in
learning English. The solution to the problem is that students need to learn from
several sources related to English and students need to improve or get used to
practicing it in everyday life both in the school environment and outside school, this
can also be done by frequently interacting with class teachers who teach English.
The study reveals that both internal and external factors contribute to
students' motivation in learning English. Internal factors, such as students' interests
and beliefs, are the primary reasons for motivation decrease. External factors, such
as peers, teachers, and facilities, also play a role. Friends and surrounded by friends
who dislike English lessons can also affect motivation. Schools lack adequate
facilities for English learning, and the library collection is limited. These factors
make it difficult for students to increase their resources, further reducing motivation
in learning English. The research was conducted in high schools or Madrasah
Aliyah. Overall, these factors contribute to students' struggles in learning English.
