Abstract
ABSTRACT
THE EFFECT OF KANGAROO MOTHER CARE (KMC) ON WEIGHT
GAIN IN LBW INFANTS
By: WIWIN KRISTIANI
Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) effectively helps increase the weight of LBW
infants due to skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby, thereby stimulating
exclusive breastfeeding for weight gain. This study aimed to determine the effect of
KMC on weight gain in LBW infants.
The study design was a quasi-experimental design, comparing pre-test and
post-test scores. The study population consisted of all LBW infants in 2024 in the
Perinatology Unit of Aisyiyah General Hospital, Ponorogo, totaling 89 cases and
the Perinatology Unit of Muhammadiyah General Hospital, Ponorogo, totaling 93
cases. The sample size was 8 respondents. Consecutive sampling was used for the
study, and data collection involved observation of LBW infants' weight before and
after KMC on day 1 to day 14. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon
Signed Ranks Test.
The results of the study showed that before KMC administration, 5
respondents (62.5%) weighed 2,200 grams, after KMC administration, 2
respondents (25.0%) weighed 2,550 grams, and the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test
analysis obtained a P value of 0,012, indicating that the administration of
Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) on increasing the weight of LBW babies.
KMC is a nursing method given to LBW babies by providing skin-to-skin
contact with the mother by transferring the mother's body heat to the baby, thus
providing a solution for increasing weight in LBW babies.
