Abstract
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FAMILY SUPPORT AND ELDERLY COMPLIANCE IN DIABETES MELLITUS DIET AT SAMBIT PUBLIC HEALTH CENTER, PONOROGO DISTRICT
By : Nur Fadilah Syamsa Hawaa
Diabetes mellitus is a non-communicable disease whose incidence continues to rise, particularly among the elderly. Lack of physical activity, non-adherence to a diabetes diet, and low family support are factors contributing to suboptimal blood sugar control.
This study aimed to determine the relationship between family support and adherence to the diabetes mellitus diet in elderly people at the Sambit Community Health Center in Ponorogo Regency. The study used a quantitative method with a cross-sectional approach. A sample of 76 elderly respondents with diabetes was selected using the Slovin formula. The research instruments were questionnaires on dietary adherence and family support, while data analysis used the Chi-square test.
The results of the study showed that most respondents had high family support (67.1%) with 51 respondents, and 25 respondents (32.9%) had low family support. A total of 51 respondents (67.1%) had high dietary compliance, 12 respondents (15.8%) had moderate dietary compliance, and 13 respondents (15.8%) had low dietary compliance. The results of the Chi-square test obtained a p value of 0.001 <α (0.05), which indicates a significant relationship between family support and elderly compliance in carrying out a DM diet.
The conclusion of this study is a significant relationship between family support and adherence to the diabetes mellitus diet in older adults. Healthcare workers and families are expected to provide optimal support to help older adults manage their diabetes, particularly in following the diabetes mellitus diet.
