Abstract

Ahmad Mustofa Al-Maraghi and M. Quraish Shihab are exegetes born and raised in different eras and environments, which influenced their differing interpretations. The comparison of their interpretations is intriguing, especially in how each respond to the matter of children's character education. This research aims to reveal the Islamic educational values contained in Surah Luqman verses 12–19 as analyzed through Tafsir Al-Maraghi and Al-Mishbah, their relevance to character education in Indonesia, and to compare the educational values found in these verses through the two interpretations.
This study uses a qualitative approach with a library research method. The primary sources are Tafsir Al-Maraghi and Tafsir Al-Mishbah. The data is analyzed descriptively and qualitatively.
The results of this study are: 1) The Islamic educational values found in Surah Luqman verses 12–19 include three aspects: faith (aqidah), religious practice (sharia), and ethics (akhlaq); 2) The relevance of these Islamic values to character education in Indonesia includes: a) The value of gratitude taught in Surah Luqman is very relevant for instilling appreciation of effort and hard work, as well as fostering a grateful attitude for achievements; b) The emphasis on steadfastness in worship, as taught by Luqman to his son, can be applied to character education by stressing the importance of spirituality and faith; c) Noble ethical values in the surah are highly relevant to character education in Indonesia. 3) Similarities in educational values in the two interpretations include: a) Both emphasize the importance of noble character in daily life; b) Both agree on the centrality of monotheism (tauhid) as the foundation of Islamic education; c) Both highlight the importance of good social relationships. Differences include: a) In ethics, Al-Maraghi tends to be more descriptive, while Al-Mishbah is more practical and gives concrete examples; b) Regarding tauhid, Al-Maraghi focuses more on the theological aspect, whereas Al-Mishbah emphasizes practical application; c) In social matters, Al-Maraghi views them from the perspective of duty and ethics, while Al-Mishbah stresses justice and social concern.
