THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SPIRITUALITY AND DEPRESSION IN ELDERLY PEOPLE LIVING WITH FAMILY IN SAYUTAN HALL, MAGETAN REGENCY

Spirituality is a belief in an individual's relationship with the Almighty and the Creator, factors that influence a person's spirituality are age, family, and psychological. Depression is a disturbance in emotional conditions of sadness, feeling unhappy, losing enthusiasm, feeling worthless. Elderly is the final stage of development in every human life and changes that occur in the elderly are physical, cognitive, mental, spiritual changes. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between spirituality and depression in the elderly. The method in this study is correlational with the Spearman rank approach. The population in the study were elderly people living in Sayutan hamlet, Magetan district. The number of samples in this study was 66 elderly people with purposive sampling. Data collection used the DSES (Daily Spiritual Experience Scale) and GDS (Geriatric Depression Scale) questionnaires..Data were analyzed using the Spearman rank test. In this study there were 63 elderly (95.5%) with moderate spirituality levels and 56 elderly (84.8%) with low levels of depression, the results of the study showed that spirituality with depression in the elderly in Sayutan hamlet had a significant value, namely (p = 0.000 <0.05) with a correlation (r = 0.559), this shows the relationship between spirituality and depression in the elderly in the strong category. The results of this study are expected that elderly respondents can carry out spirituality well to reduce the level of depression in the elderly who live with their families.
