Abstract

Myocardial infarction, commonly known as a “heart attack,” is defined as the reduction or complete cessation of blood flow to the heart muscle (myocardium), resulting in an immediate hemodynamic decline that may cause symptoms such as crushing chest pain, shortness of breath, and cold sweats. These typical symptoms, combined with environmental discomfort, can significantly affect patients’ sleep patterns.
This case study was aimed at providing nursing care to a myocardial infarction patient, specifically with NSTEMI, who experienced a nursing problem of sleep pattern disturbance. The selected intervention was the application of an eye mask along with music therapy (murottal) delivered through earphones. The intervention was implemented in the Darwis Ward of Muhammadiyah Ponorogo General Hospital for five consecutive days, following a scheduled pattern (22 – 23 – 07). Both interventions were initiated at 22:00 p.m., the murottal therapy was stopped after one hour, and the patient was instructed to complete the RCSQ questionnaire the following morning.
The assessment revealed that the patient had sleep disturbances due to both internal and external factors, as well as irregular sleep habits at home, which were confirmed by a poor RCSQ baseline score (49.20). After the application of the eye mask and murottal therapy, sleep quality improved progressively, with scores increasing from (52.40) on the first evaluation day to (76.00) on the final day. The overall percentage increase was (45.04%).
In conclusion, the application of eye masks and murottal therapy proved to be effective in improving sleep quality in myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) patients with nursing problems related to sleep pattern disturbances.
