Shortness of breath is a common and even primary symptom in patients with pneumonia. One non-pharmacological intervention that can be used is Balloon Blowing Therapy (BBT), a breathing exercise technique that involves blowing up balloons to improve alveolar expansion and oxygenation.
This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of BBT implementation in pneumonia patients with ineffective breathing patterns in the Darwis Ward of Muhammadiyah Ponorogo General Hospital. The method used was a case study with a nursing process approach through assessment, diagnosis, intervention, implementation, and evaluation.
Data were obtained through interviews, observations, and documentation of a 58-year-old patient who received BBT for five days, each session lasting 10 minutes. Results showed an improvement in respiratory rate from 26 breaths/minute to 20 breaths/minute, an increase in oxygen saturation from 89% to 99%, and a more regular breathing pattern.
The analysis demonstrated that BBT effectively increased alveolar ventilation and improved breathing patterns through controlled expiration. The discussion emphasized that BBT can be a simple, inexpensive, and feasible nursing intervention implemented in healthcare facilities and at home.
