The Golek Dino tradition is a Javanese cultural practice used to determine an auspicious day prior to conducting a marriage ceremony. This tradition functions not only as a guideline for selecting the appropriate time but also as a space for cultural communication in which symbols, values, and beliefs are transmitted across generations. This study aims to analyze the forms, processes, and meanings of cultural communication within the Golek Dino tradition in the selection of wedding dates in Ngrayun Village, Ngrayun District, Ponorogo Regency. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, using George Herbert Mead’s theory of symbolic interactionism as the theoretical framework to understand the interpretation of cultural symbols—such as weton, neptu, and market-day calculations—within interactions among traditional elders, the families of prospective brides and grooms, and the wider community. Data are collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. This study is expected to provide insights into the role of cultural communication in preserving and interpreting the meaning of the Golek Dino tradition amid social changes in modern Society. The findings indicate that the Golek Dino tradition is still actively practiced and is understood as a form of cultural endeavor aimed at achieving safety, harmony, and tranquility in married life. Cultural communication within this tradition takes place through family deliberation processes that involve the interpretation of symbols such as weton, neptu, and the concept of jejer jarak. These symbols are collectively interpreted and serve as the basis for social decision-making. From the perspective of symbolic interactionism, Golek Dino functions as a medium for the formation of meaning (Mind), individual Self-adjustment to social expectations (Self), and mechanisms of social control and order within Society (Society). This study concludes that the Golek Dino tradition not only represents a customary practice but also constitutes a dynamic form of cultural communication that enables the community to preserve traditional values while adapting them to the context of modern social life. These findings contribute to the field of cultural communication studies, particularly in understanding the role of symbols and social interaction in sustaining local traditions.
