Abstract
Typhoid fever is a systemic infection caused by Salmonella typhi, which affects the small intestine and spreads through the bloodstream. One of the common clinical manifestations is hyperthermia, defined as an increase in body temperature above 38.5°C due to a disruption in the body's temperature regulation mechanism or external factors. The purpose of this case study is to evaluate the effectiveness of nursing care interventions in managing hyperthermia in a child diagnosed with typhoid fever. This study employed a case study design using the nursing care process approach, including assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
Nursing care was provided to a child (referred to as Patient A) with typhoid fever over a three-day period in April 2025 at Dahlia Ward, Darmayu General Hospital, Ponorogo. Data were collected through direct observation, interviews, and physical examination. The assessment revealed that the patient experienced a high fever (38.7°C), accompanied by complaints of dizziness and fatigue. Interventions included family education regarding hyperthermia, advice on adequate rest, fluid intake promotion, warm compress using shallots, monitoring of vital signs and fluid balance, and collaboration in administering antipyretics and antibiotics.
The evaluation showed a decrease in body temperature to normal levels, stabilization of vital signs, and reduction in subjective complaints. These results indicate that appropriate nursing interventions can effectively manage hyperthermia in pediatric patients with typhoid fever.
