Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways characterized by bronchial hyperresponsiveness, reversible airway obstruction, and symptoms such as shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness. One method used to overcome these problems is the application of the Buteyko breathing technique. The Buteyko technique is a non-pharmacological therapy. This study aimed to provide nursing care for asthma patients in managing the nursing problem of an ineffective breathing pattern.
Nursing care for a patient with asthma was conducted from April 23 to April 27, 2026, in Mina Ward at ‘Aisyiyah General Hospital Ponorogo. The method used was a nursing process approach.
Assessment findings were obtained from subjective data. Mr. S, a 50-year-old patient, was admitted to ‘Aisyiyah General Hospital Ponorogo with complaints of shortness of breath, rapid breathing, and productive cough. The results of vital sign examination showed blood pressure of 138/87 mmHg, respiratory rate of 24 breaths per minute, body temperature of 36.5°C, and oxygen saturation (SpO₂) of 94% on room air. Nursing interventions included the implementation of the Buteyko breathing technique. The intervention was carried out for five days, and the results indicated that this technique was effective in improving the patient's breathing pattern, as evidenced by reduced dyspnea and improved oxygen saturation.
The Buteyko breathing technique is a highly effective nursing intervention for improving breathing patterns in asthma patients. By understanding the benefits and mechanisms of the Buteyko technique, nurses can integrate this method into the care programs of patients with respiratory diseases to improve their quality of life.
