Abstract
Riasti Sakilah. 2026. THESIS. The Relationship Between Stress and Sleep Quality Among Students Living Away from Home in the Sang Musafir Community. Advisor 1: Dr. Sri Susanti, M.A. Advisor 2: Yusuf Hamdani Abdi, M.Psi.

This study aims to identify the relationship between stress and sleep quality among students living far from their families in the Sang Musafir Community. Students living away from home are a group that faces various academic, social, and emotional adaptation demands due to living far from their families, making them more vulnerable to stress that can affect their sleep quality. This study used a quantitative approach with a correlational research design. The sample consisted of 60 students living away from home who are members of the Sang Musafir Community at Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo. The sample was selected using purposive sampling based on the following criteria: active students at Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo who are members of the Sang Musafir Community; students living away from home (living far from family/parents); and aged 17-25 years; enrolled in semesters 1 through 7. The data collection instruments consisted of a stress scale (32 items; α = 0.872) and a sleep quality scale (29 items; α = 0.926), both of which had passed validity and reliability tests. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, classical assumption tests, hypothesis testing (t-test), and Pearson’s product-moment correlation test using SPSS version 26. The results of the descriptive analysis showed that the stress levels of students living away from home fell into the very high category with a mean score of 105.28 (SD = 11.679), while sleep quality fell into the high category with a mean score of 91.78 (SD = 13.419), indicating a high level of sleep quality disturbance among students living away from home. The classical assumption tests showed that the data were normally distributed (p = 0.051) and exhibited a linear relationship (p = 0.133). The results of the hypothesis testing indicated that stress was significantly and positively associated with sleep quality (β = 0.558; t = 4.232; p < 0.05). Furthermore, the results of the Pearson Product-Moment correlation test showed a significant positive relationship between stress and sleep quality (r = 0.486; p < 0.05), indicating that the higher the level of stress experienced by students living away from home, the higher their sleep quality scores—which indicates poorer sleep quality.
