Abstract

Diah Febriana Munawaroh. The Relationship Between Students’ Mindset and
English Language Skills in the Digital Era. Thesis. Department of English
Language Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas
Muhammadiyah Ponorogo. Advisor 1 Dr. Dyah Atiek Mustikawati, M.Hum.,
Advisor 2 Dr. Elok Putri Nimasari, M.Pd.
This study aimed to examine the relationship between students’ mindset and
English language skills among students of the English Language Education Study
Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Ponorogo in the digital era.
This study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational research
design. Before the main data collection, a pilot test was conducted to evaluate the
validity and reliability of the research instrument. The participants of the main
study consisted of 88 active students selected through a total sampling technique.
The data were collected using a questionnaire that had been tested for validity and
reliability. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Pearson
Product-Moment correlation test, and the coefficient of determination with the
assistance of IBM SPSS Statistics.
The results showed a positive and statistically significant relationship
between students’ mindset and English language skills, with a correlation
coefficient of r = 0.347 and a significance value of p = 0.001 (p < 0.05). Although
the correlation was categorized as low, it was statistically significant. The findings
indicate that students with higher mindset scores tended to have better English
language skills. Furthermore, students’ mindset contributed 12.04% to the
variance in students’ English language skills, while the remaining 87.96% was
explained by other factors not examined in this study. In conclusion, students’
mindset has a positive and statistically significant relationship with English
language skills among students of the English Language Education Study
Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Ponorogo in the digital era. These
findings support Dweck’s Growth Mindset Theory and indicate that students’
mindset is one of the psychological factors associated with the development of
English language skills in digital learning environments.
