Abstract
ABSTRACT
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STRES LEVEL, PHYSICAL
ACTIVITY AND HYPERTENSION SEVERITY AMONG PROLANIS
MEMBERS IN KAUMAN VILLAGE, KAUMAN BARU COMMUNITY
HEALTH CENTER (PUSKESMAS) WORKING AREA, PONOROGO
By : Intan Pambudiasih
Hypertension is a non-communicable disease that poses a public health
challenge due to its rising prevalence and potential to cause various
complications. Stress levels and physical activity are factors suspected to be
associated with the severity of hypertension. This study aimed to analyze the
relationship between stress levels, physical activity, and the severity of
hypertension among Prolanis members at the Kauman Baru Community Health
Center (Puskesmas) in Ponorogo.
The study employed a quantitative design with a cross-sectional
approach. The population in this study consisted of 50 Prolanis members, the
sample consisted of 35 respondents selected using purposive sampling. The
independent variables were stress levels and physical activity, while the
dependent variable was hypertension. Research instruments included a
questionnaire and the Prolanis member attendance list. Statistical analysis was
performed using the Spearman Rank test. Data on stress levels were collected
using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) questionnaire, physical activity was
assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), and
hypertension status was determined through blood pressure measurements. Data
analysis was conducted using the Chi-Square test.
The study results indicate that the majority of respondents experienced
severe stress (n=19; 53.4%) and engaged in moderate physical activity (n=15;
42.9%). Regarding blood pressure, 18 respondents (51.4%) presented with Grade
1 hypertension. Bivariate analysis revealed a significant association between
stress levels and the occurrence of hypertension (p=0.000; p<0.05), as well as
between physical activity and the severity of hypertension (p=0.002; p<0.05). It is
concluded that stress levels and physical activity are associated with the
occurrence of hypertension among Prolanis members in Kauman Village.
Therefore, stress management—through techniques such as relaxation,
counseling, and social support—and the promotion of regular physical activity
tailored to individual capabilities are necessary. These approaches are expected to
help control blood pressure, prevent the worsening of hypertension, and reduce
the risk of cardiovascular complications.
