Abstract
The population is increasing and the industry continues to grow, and the need for energy is also increasing. This encourages the use of renewable energy sources that do not damage the environment. One of the other options is charcoal briquettes made from biomass raw materials. This study wanted to determine the impact of different mixtures of coconut shells, rambutan wood, and ivory coconut fronds on the performance of charcoal briquettes. This study uses an experimental method with five variations of raw material mixtures, namely V1 with a composition of 50%:30%:10%, V2 with 50%:25%:15%, V3 with 50%:20%:20%, V4 with 50%:15%:25%, and V5 with 50%:10%:30%. In each variation, an adhesive in the form of tapioca flour is added as much as 10%. The manufacturing process includes several stages such as carbonization, refining, filtering using a 60-mesh sieve, mixing, printing, and drying. The test was carried out to measure the calorific value, moisture content, ash content, flame temperature, and ignition time of the briquettes. Research shows that different types of raw materials affect the properties of charcoal briquettes. The V2 variation provides the best results with a calorific value of 5,412 cal/g, a moisture content of 3.31%, an ash content of 10.00%, a combustion temperature of 367.92°C, and a burning time of 1.15 hours. All variations meet SNI 01-6235-2000 standards for calorific and moisture content parameters, but ash content is still above the required maximum limit. The composition consisting of 50% coconut shell, 25% rambutan wood, 15% ivory coconut leaves, and 10% adhesive in the form of tapioca flour is recommended as the best composition because it is able to provide a good balance in terms of calorific value, moisture content, combustion temperature, and combustion duration.
