Abstract

ABSTRACT
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT AND DEPRESSION LEVELS IN CHRONIC KIDNEY FAILURE PATIENTS UNDERGOING HEMODIALYSIS AT AISYIYAH GENERAL HOSPITAL PONOROGO
By : Dwi Handayani
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a condition involving kidney damage that necessitates medical intervention in the form of hemodialysis therapy. A common issue arising from long-term hemodialysis is depression; consequently, patients require robust psychosocial support. This study aimed to determine the relationship between psychosocial support and the severity of depressive symptoms among CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis at Aisyiyah General Hospital, Ponorogo.
The study employed a quantitative correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. It was conducted from May to June 2026 in the hemodialysis unit in Ponorogo. The study population consisted of 140 CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis. A sample of 58 respondents was selected using the consecutive sampling technique. Data collection utilized the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman Rank test with a significance level of α = 0.05.
The study results indicate that the majority of respondents (37 individuals or 63.8%) possessed good psychosocial support, while the majority (32 individuals or 55.2%) experienced mild depression. The Spearman Rank test yielded a p-value of 0.000 ≤ α (0.05), leading to the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha); this signifies a relationship between psychosocial support and the level of depressive symptoms among chronic kidney failure patients undergoing hemodialysis at Aisyiyah General Hospital, Ponorogo.
The research findings lead to the conclusion that psychosocial support significantly reduces depression levels in patients undergoing hemodialysis. It is expected that psychosocial support from family, close associates, friends, and the community will make patients feel valued and loved, thereby lowering their levels of depression.
