Doomscrolling refers to an individual's tendency to continuously scroll through negative content on social media despite the unpleasant emotional impact it causes, and it may increase the risk of psychological distress, particularly among final-year nursing students who face heavy academic burdens from thesis writing. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between Doomscrolling intensity and the level of psychological distress among final-year nursing students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Ponorogo.
This study used a descriptive correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The population consisted of 94 students, with a sample of 76 respondents selected through proportional random sampling. Data were collected using the Doomscrolling Scale (DS-15) and the Kessler Psychological distress Scale (K10), and analyzed using the Spearman Rank correlation test.
The results showed that most respondents had a moderate level of Doomscrolling intensity (55.3%) and a very high level of psychological distress (57.9%). The statistical test revealed a significant relationship between Doomscrolling intensity and psychological distress (rho=0.402; p=0.000), with a positive direction and a moderate strength of correlation.
The higher the Doomscrolling intensity, the higher the level of psychological distress experienced by students. Future research is recommended to examine the subsequent pathway of this study's theoretical framework, namely the relationship between psychological distress and mental wellbeing, to gain a more complete understanding of how Doomscrolling affects students' mental wellbeing.
