Abstract

This research aims to investigate the students’ pronunciation of word stress in English Department at the Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo. This research design was qualitative research. The researcher used observation and questionnaire as the data collection technique. The observation was in the form of checklist and open questionnaire. The researcher also added pictures and audio recordings to support the results of the data to be more reliable and credible. The findings of the research showed that 60% of students were good in knowledge. It was because student understand about word stress, unstressed, degrees of word stress and syllables. Moreover, most of students were also good in practice because it can be seen from observation that researchers have done, 71% students did not many mistakes in the pronunciation of word stress. The study concluded that almost all students were good in their knowledge and practice. The researcher expects that students can balance between knowledge (theory) that has been learned and practice it into real life.
