Abstract
The phenomenon of self harm is becoming increasingly concerning, particularly in Ponorogo. Self harm is defined as the intentional act of injuring oneself as an outlet for overwhelming negative emotions, without any intention of suicide. One of the factors associated with this behaviour is the level of depression. An initial screening conducted by the researcher during a mental health education session using the SRQ-20 revealed that 11 students showed symptoms of depression and 1 student was identified as engaging in self harm. This formed the basis for conducting this study, which aims to determine the relationship between depression levels and self harm among adolescents at MTsN 3 Ponorogo.
This study employed a quantitative method with a correlational design and a cross sectional approach. The sample consisted of 239 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires and analysed with the Spearman Rank correlation test.
The findings showed that 99 respondents (41.4%) experienced mild depression and 164 respondents (68.6%) exhibited mild self harm. Cross tabulation results indicated that 83 respondents (83.8%) experienced both mild depression and mild self harm, while 16 respondents (20.3%) experienced severe depression and severe self harm. The Spearman Rank test produced a p-value of 0.001, which is less than α 0.05, indicating a significant relationship between depression levels and self harm.
This research supports the hypothesis that depression levels are significantly associated with self harm among adolescents, particularly at MTsN 3 Ponorogo. It highlights the need for greater attention from parents, teachers, and healthcare professionals in detecting and managing depression early to prevent self harm. Future research is recommended to explore other variables such as bullying, which is closely related to the school environment and may impact adolescent psychological wellbeing.
