The elderly are a vulnerable age group experiencing declines in physical function, including activities of daily living (ADL) and sleep quality. Decreased independence in ADL can impact sleep quality. This study aimed to determine the relationship between ADL levels and sleep quality in the elderly at the Magetan PSTW (Healthcare and Rehabilitation Unit).
This study used a descriptive analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. A sample of 52 elderly individuals was obtained through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Barthel Index (ADL) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaires. Analysis was performed using the Spearman Rank Test. The results showed that most elderly individuals had mild dependence in ADL (73.1%) and very poor sleep quality (75.0%). There was a significant relationship between ADL and sleep quality (r = –0.302; p = 0.029). The more independent the elderly were in ADL, the better their sleep quality.
These findings demonstrate the importance of improving ADL abilities through physical and psychosocial interventions to support healthy aging. The researchers recommend further studies examining the relationship between ADL and depression, as well as considering sleep quality as a mediator of mental health in the elderly.
