The development of students’ responsibility and discipline is one of the important objectives of Islamic Religious Education (PAI). However, in its implementation, some students still do not consistently demonstrate responsible and disciplined attitudes. Therefore, PAI teachers are required to optimize appropriate strategies so that character values can be developed and manifested in students’ daily behavior.
This study employed a qualitative approach using a case study design. The informants involved in this study consisted of the head of the madrasah, Islamic Religious Education teachers, and students. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with the informants, and documentation related to the research focus. To ensure the validity of the data, the researcher applied source triangulation and technique triangulation.
The results of the study indicate that PAI teachers’ strategies were implemented through exemplary behavior (uswah hasanah), habituation of religious activities, provision of advice and motivation, enforcement of school regulations, supervision, and continuous evaluation. These strategies contributed to improving students’ responsibility and discipline, as demonstrated by completing assignments, obeying regulations, participating in religious activities, and maintaining the cleanliness of the school environment. The success of these strategies was supported by cooperation among members of the madrasah community, parental involvement, an Islamic school culture, and adequate facilities. Meanwhile, the inhibiting factors included differences in students’ characteristics, limited family support, peer environmental influences, gadget use, and students’ low level of awareness. This study concludes that well-planned and consistently implemented PAI teachers’ strategies, supported by the active involvement of the entire madrasah community, contribute to the development of students’ responsibility and discipline at MIN 6 Magetan.
