ABSTRACT
Education is not only oriented toward the mastery of knowledge but also toward the formation of students’ character. The learning environment and school culture are important factors influencing the development of students’ religious and disciplinary character. This study aims to examine the role of the learning environment and school culture in shaping students’ religious and disciplinary character at SMP Negeri 1 Ponorogo. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The research subjects consisted of the principal, Islamic Education teachers, subject teachers, and students of SMP Negeri 1 Ponorogo. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, while data validity was ensured through source and technique triangulation. The results of the study indicate that a conducive learning environment and positive school culture play a significant role in shaping students’ religious and disciplinary character. Religious habituation activities such as congregational prayers, Qur’an recitation, and praying before and after learning activities foster students’ religious character. Meanwhile, the implementation of school rules, teachers’ exemplary behavior, and the cultivation of discipline through routine activities and school regulations contribute to the development of students’ disciplinary attitudes. In conclusion, the learning environment and school culture have an important role in the formation of students’ religious and disciplinary character. Therefore, synergy among schools, teachers, and all school members needs to be continuously strengthened to create an educational environment that supports character building.
