Abstract

The elderly phase represents the final stage of the human lifespan, characterized by natural declines in physical and psychological functions, making this population vulnerable to various emotional pressures. This deteriorating condition often triggers stressors that, if left unmanaged, can lead to prolonged stress and subsequent poor sleep quality among older adults. This study aims to analyze the correlation between stress levels and sleep quality in the elderly at the Elderly Posyandu in Tumpuk Village, Sawoo Community Health Center Work Area, Ponorogo Regency.

This study was conducted using a quantitative method with a descriptive correlational design and a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 101 elderly respondents aged 60-74 years, selected through a probability sampling technique with a simple random sampling approach. Data collection was carried out using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales 42 (DASS-42) questionnaire to measure stress levels and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to evaluate sleep quality. Data analysis was tested using the Spearman Rank statistical test.

The results of the data analysis indicated a significance value of p = 0.000 (α ≤ 0,05) with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.656. Based on these results, there is a significant correlation with a strong category and a positive direction between stress levels and sleep quality in the elderly at the Tumpuk Village Elderly Posyandu. This positive correlation indicates that higher levels of stress are associated with poorer sleep quality experienced by the elderly.

These findings suggest the importance of attention from healthcare professionals and posyandu cadres in providing stress management education to improve sleep quality in the elderly.
