Hypertension remains a major health problem in Indonesia, with a high prevalence and a risk of complications such as stroke, heart disease, and kidney disease. Blood pressure control among patients with hypertension remains a challenge, particularly when adherence to medication is suboptimal. The lower the patients’ adherence to antihypertensive medication, the greater the likelihood of uncontrolled blood pressure, whereas better adherence tends to be associated with better blood pressure control. This condition highlights the importance of determining the relationship between medication adherence and blood pressure control among patients with hypertension at Sukorejo Public Health Center, Ponorogo Regency.
This study employed a quantitative research design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of 1,166 patients with hypertension. A total of 92 respondents were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data on medication adherence were collected using the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8) questionnaire, while blood pressure control was assessed through respondents' blood pressure measurements. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test with a significance level of α = 0.05.
The results showed that the majority of respondents had a high level of medication adherence, accounting for 58 respondents (63.0%), while 23.9% had a low level of adherence. Most respondents had controlled blood pressure, with 56 respondents (60.9%), whereas 36 respondents (39.1%) had uncontrolled blood pressure. The Chi-square test yielded a p-value < 0.001 (α = 0.05), indicating a statistically significant relationship between medication adherence and blood pressure control among patients with hypertension at Sukorejo Community Health Center, Ponorogo Regency. Therefore, patient education, as well as support from family members and healthcare professionals, is essential to improve patients' adherence to antihypertensive therapy.
