Uncontrolled blood glucose levels among older adults are one of the health problems that may be influenced by various factors, including dietary patterns. Dietary patterns practiced in daily life are related to the type, amount, and frequency of food consumed and may therefore be associated with blood glucose levels. This study aimed to determine the relationship between dietary patterns and blood glucose levels among older adults at the Integrated Primary Healthcare (ILP) Posyandu in Dukuh Batik, Gondowido Village, Ngebel District, Ponorogo Regency.
This study employed an analytic observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The population consisted of 127 older adults, with 56 respondents selected using a purposive sampling technique. The instruments used were the Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire (SPMSQ) for cognitive function screening, the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) to assess dietary patterns, and blood glucose measurement using a glucometer. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses with the Pearson Chi-Square test.
The results showed that most respondents had good dietary patterns, accounting for 40 respondents (71.4%), and most respondents had hyperglycemic blood glucose levels, accounting for 37 respondents (66.1%). Based on the cross-tabulation results, respondents with poor dietary patterns were predominantly in the normal blood glucose category, with 13 respondents (81.3%), whereas respondents with good dietary patterns were predominantly hyperglycemic, with 34 respondents (85.0%). The Pearson Chi-Square test showed a χ² value of 22.376 with a p-value < 0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant relationship between dietary patterns and blood glucose levels among older adults.
The study concluded that there was a significant relationship between dietary patterns and blood glucose levels among older adults at the Integrated Primary Healthcare (ILP) Posyandu in Dukuh Batik, Gondowido Village, Ngebel District, Ponorogo Regency. However, the study demonstrated a distribution pattern that differed from some previous studies; therefore, this relationship should be interpreted by considering other factors that may also be associated with blood glucose levels among older adults.
