Sleep pattern disturbances are among the common problems experienced by older adults due to the aging process, physiological changes, and environmental factors that can reduce their quality of life. One effective non-pharmacological intervention is warm water foot soaking combined with foot massage. This study aimed to implement warm water foot soak and foot massage therapy in an older adult experiencing sleep pattern disturbances at the Tresna Werdha Social Service Unit (UPT Pelayanan Sosial Tresna Werdha/PSTW) Magetan.
The method used was a case study report employing the nursing process approach, which included nursing assessment, nursing diagnosis, intervention, implementation, and evaluation. Data were collected through interviews and physical examinations of Mr. M over five days, from July 27 to 31, 2026, at Wisma Abimanyu, Tresna Werdha Social Service Unit (UPT Pelayanan Sosial Tresna Werdha/PSTW) Magetan.
The assessment results showed that Mr. M complained of difficulty sleeping, frequent awakenings at night, and inadequate rest. The identified nursing problem was sleep pattern disturbance, with an initial Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score of 13, indicating poor sleep quality. The nursing intervention provided was sleep support through non-pharmacological therapy consisting of warm water foot soaking and foot massage. After five days of therapy, the client's sleep quality improved, as indicated by a decrease in the PSQI score from 13 to 4, indicating good sleep quality, reduced complaints of difficulty sleeping, and decreased frequency of nighttime awakenings.
In conclusion, warm water foot soak and foot massage therapy are effective non-pharmacological nursing interventions for improving sleep quality in older adults with sleep pattern disturbances and can be implemented as a simple and safe therapeutic intervention.
